Portland Musings

I am on a work assignment in Portland from the beginning of October until the end of year. I’ve only been here a week but it is quite different than Texas and it is causing me to wonder about several issues.

Questions I have about Portland:

1) Are the people sitting on the street homeless or just doing that because they enjoy it?
2) Didn’t they stop selling Doc Martens like 10 years ago?
3) Are people allowed to drive SUVs here?
4) Am I the only person here who likes eating fried foods and tex-mex?
5) Does it snow here?
6) How long do you have to not wash your hair for it to turn into dreadlocks?
7) Do bugs live in the dreadlocks mentioned above?

I’m sure the list will get longer as time goes on.

  2. My dad's answers:

    1) Portland has a massive homeless population (realitive to other cities). Two reasons for this. First, the weather is quite nice so they don't get too hot or two cold outside. Second, the city is quite liberal so there are more protections and handouts.

    2) Don't know what that is.

    3) You could drive one but you would be quite hated. Socially the SUV is not green and the folks from Oregon are deep into "save the planet"

    4) Back to nature again. Think of them as hippies. That's the mind set so organic and health foods are more popular.

    5) About as often as it does in Texas. They do get more nasty ice storms, though.

    6) My hair is too short to know.

    7) See #6 above.
